Abstract
Intended to remind and inform designers and site supervisory staff of ways of avoiding some of the most troublesome defects which have beset Local Authority housing. This Defect Action Sheet covers chimney stacks: taking out of service. Failures discussed include damp penetration and staining of chimney breasts; water vapour conducted from rooms to roof void; and increased condensation in rooms. Defects discussed include flues not vented, exposed disused stacks not weatherproofed; flues vented but open to roof space; and room ventilation inadequate following sealing of flue.
