Abstract
Intended to remind and inform designers and site supervisory staff of ways of avoiding some of the most troublesome defects which have beset Local Authority housing. This Defect Action Sheet covers brickwork: prevention of sulphate attack. Failures discussed include expansion of jointing mortar, bowing of walls, oversailing of walls at dpc level. Defects discussed include brickwork persistently wet, use of ordinary Portland cement, use of bricks with high sulphate content, and use of excessively weak mixes.
