Abstract
The first part of the paper deals with the explosion and toxic hazards which may be associated with the release of methane and other gases from landfill sites. Various aspects of the problem are discussed. The second part of the paper considers the possibility that a fire may be initiated and propagate through filled land below the surface. The properties of such fires are described, potential sources of ignition are highlighted and methods whereby fires may be prevented are outlined.
