Abstract
Intended to remind and inform designers and site supervisory staff of ways of avoiding some of the most troublesome defects which have beset Local Authority housing. This Defect Action Sheet covers internal walls: ceramic wall tiles - loss of adhesion. Failures discussed include loss of adhesion: tiles to adhesive, adhesive to paint/plaster/render, paint/plaster/ render to background; plaster or plasterboard deteriorates when wetted, tiling subsequently bulges or becomes detached. Defects discussed include unsuitable adhesive, adhesive incorrectly spread, tiling insufficiently tamped, fixing delay, surface incorrectly prepared or primed, substrate bond poor, lack of movement joints in large tiled areas.
