Abstract
Intended to remind and inform designers and site supervisory staff of ways of avoiding some of the most troublesome defects which have beset Local Authority housing. This Defect Action Sheet covers domestic chimneys: re-building or lining existing chimneys. Failures discussed include staining of internal plaster and decorations; staining of external brickwork; distortion and cracking of stack, cracking and disintegration of renderings; and expansion of brick joints in stack, causing curling and instability. Defects discussed include chimney not lined and not insulated when built; and fuel or appliance used with the chimney has been changed.
