Abstract
All over the world at present, codes of practice are inaccurate for the design of masonry walls subjected to concentrated vertical loads. This paper will therefore be of value, especially to civil and structural design engineers. It deals with the main parameters which affect local bearing stresses, and gives design guidance in the light of recent research findings.
