Digest 383 Site investigation for low-rise building: soil description
Publication Year
1993
Document Status

Abstract
The most important part of any site investigation is a careful, accurate description of the ground where the building is to be constructed. Much useful information on the likely ground behaviour can be gained from a good description of the soil or rock encountered. To obtain a proper description of the ground, the soil must be examined in its natural state; trial pits and, where appropriate, boreholes should therefore be excavated to a layout plan proposed in advance. The investigation should be based on knowledge gained from the desk study and walk-over survey. It must take into account the variations in the topography and local geology of the site, together with the anticipated layout of the building and its foundations.
