Abstract

The Report discusses briefly the geomorphology of till deposits in the UK, their distribution and general engineering properties. The Report is also relevant to other tills, such as North Sea tills or those found in Canada. Aspects of sampling and testing of various types of till and the appraisal of the results of laboratory tests are considered. The design of pile foundations in cohesive and granular till is reviewed, including the selection of soil parameters. Where possible, the design procedures are related to the results of back-calculated parameters from a large number of pile tests carried out in glacial till which were collected for this Report. Settlement prediction of a single pile is considered on a simple comparative basis using the collected performance data. Suggestions are made for more detailed prediction for single piles and pile groups. Dynamic formulae are considered, and a final section deals with pile selection and installation in till.
