Technical Note TN 128 Civil engineering sealants in wet conditions: review of performance and interim guidance on use

Publication Year

1987

Document Status

Current

Abstract

The correct specification of civil engineering sealants, and the design of related joints, is particularly important in wet service conditions and yet existing Standards and specifications are of only limited relevance, due mainly to the lack of any durability requirement in relation to long-term exposure to water. This Technical Note reports on the performance of sealants in wet conditions. Background details on different types of wet operational environment, the types and functions of joints, and considerations relating to the design and construction of a sealed joint are reviewed. Emphasis is laid on the importance of correct joint preparation and sealant application. The main sealant types and their principal characteristics are outlined, and the current Standards and specifications reviewed.
