Abstract
The control of movement should be assessed at design stage since all building materials are subject to dimensional change during and after construction. This in general can be accommodated by the use of movement joints, reinforcement and mortar type. Any settlement that occurs can put increased loads on some elements of the building, in the case of Cast Stone this would apply for example to one piece cills and built in thresholds. It is good building practice to bed only the ends of these units and to point up the joints at a later date with appropriate materials. Alternatively, where practical, temporarily bed the cills in sand until the walls are completed, loaded and the initial settlement has taken place.
