Abstract
Berrill Building for the Open University at Milton Keynes, England, provides additional office space, cafe, students' services and conference facilities. Project managers, Mace, recommended construction management as procurement method. Concrete structure of this 'green' building, designed for low energy use, uses thermal mass, cross ventilation of the structure and external shading to achieve this. Use of natural ventilation, daylight aligned to a responsive lighting control system and use of the campus district heating scheme help cut costs. The curtain wall is double glazed with insulated spandrels. Working details of external solar shading. Specification and costs.
