Abstract
Based on the risk assessment approach to fire safety issues, this design guide provides a full appreciation of the occupancy risks combined with effective limits on compartment areas and consideration ton the control of fire spread by automatic sprinkler systems.

Formed from a merger of the Fire Offices Committee, the Fire Insurers Research and Testing Organisation and the Insurers Technical Bureau in 1984, the Loss Prevention Council (LPC) later went on to develop a certification body, the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB), itself taken over by BRE Certification in April 2000.
