Technical Note TN 140 Standard tests for repair materials and coatings for concrete. Part 2: Permeability tests

Abstract
Covers methods of test suitable for the determination of permeability to gases, water and chloride. The basic mechanisms of permeability were studied and it was determined that repairs and coatings above ground that are subject to traffic spray, salt solution ponding and carbonation due to carbon dioxide in the atmosphere should be assessed with respect to their protective properties in relation to water absorption, water vapour diffusion, carbon dioxide diffusion, and chloride ion diffusion. A number of factors have been identified that need to be standardised in the procedures of the tests selected. The tests identified were divided into eleven broad categories and studied for their relevance to the required mechanisms. Finally tests have been selected that are thought suitable for assessing repair materials and coatings for their permeability to water, vapour, gases and salts.
