Report BR 426 Use of lithium compounds to prevent damaging ASR in concrete

Publication Year

2001

Document Status

Current

Abstract

The original objectives of this project were: 1. To evaluate the technology of using lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LiOH. H2O) to prevent and mitigate the affects of alkali silica reaction (ASR) and assess the appropriateness for UK conditions. 2. To provide information on whether lithium compounds can reduce the effects of the ingress of chlorides and therefore reduce corrosion of reinforcing steel, and 3. To provide guidance, to specifying authorities, on the effectiveness of lithium hydroxide in improving concrete durability. In 1997 these objectives were extended to include the use of lithium nitrate, which is less caustic than the hydroxide and so handling problems are reduced.
