Abstract
Appreciation for the arts and history dictates a need for special temperature and humidity conditions in museums, libraries, and archives. Proper environments reduce the deterioration rate of stored materials and provide comfort for the occupants. Providing stability in the building environment is often as critical as establishing correct design criteria to protect the building contents. Facilities often have open traffic patterns and require different conditions between changing exhibits. Maintaining diverse environmental conditions that are so close to each other merits special consideration. The designer must also understand the effect environmental conditions will have on the building envelope, which is of serious concern in existing buildings.
