Abstract
Buildings and facilities of various types may be heated, ventilated, air conditioned, and refrigerated-using systems and equipment designed for that purpose and using the site energy forms commonly available without concern for the original energy resources from whence those energy forms came. Since the energy used in buildings and facilities comprises a significant amount of the total energy used for all purposes, and since the use of this energy has an impact on energy resources, ASHRAE recognises the 'effect of its technology on the environment and natural resources to protect the welfare of posterity' (ASHRAE 1990).
