Abstract
Introduces the pattern of Scottish roofing. There are at least three major strands to the research; an understanding of slating and tiling craftsmanship; documentary research; and observation over a period of many years of existing buildings and roofs, quarries and geology, and the materials used for roof coverings in their historic context. No attempt has been made to deal with thatch or earthen roofs or modern corrugated materials and flexible membranes.
