Abstract

As part of the TRAMAQ programme of research sponsored by the Charging and Local Transport (CLT) Division of DETR, TRL was commissioned to investigate and provide a classification of traffic composition, by geographical area and location type, that could be used in local air quality assessments. This involved an analysis of the sensitivity of emission estimates to the parameters that describe traffic and the development of relationships that could describe how these parameters might be affected by road type, area type and time. These are provided, in the report, as a series of tables to be used with vehicle flows that are classified according to the proportion of cars, LGVs, HGVs and buses and coaches.
