Abstract
Reviews the changes in surfacings for road pavements, both in the historical developments and the technical implications. The technical implications include both the number of performance parameters that are required, which has increased, and the methods of specifying, which has changed. First published by the Institution of Asphalt Technology in ‘The Asphalt Yearbook 2001’, and awarded the annual Argent Award for the best paper. The paper has been updated slightly.
