Abstract
Outlines that a welcome fall in the number of deaths caused by fire has been accompanied by an apparently effective expansion in the range of fire and smoke protection products on the market and greater consciousness in building design, yet argues that there is still considerable room for improvement. Discusses the use of cardboard as a structural material in the proposed design of a new building for Westborough primary school in Westcliff on Sea in Essex, England, and outlines that when given an intumescent coating, tests show that the cardboard will provide adequate fire resistance at the school. Fire safety engineers: Buro Happold. Also provides indicative cost indices, at June 2001 prices, for fire protection materials and treatments, extinguishing systems and detection and alarm systems.
