Abstract
The Habitats Directive gives protection to certain rare and endangered habitats, plants and animals on land and sea within the European Union. This builds on work already done under the 1979 Directive on the Conservation of Wild Birds - The Birds Directive. This information paper explains the application of these Directives on the ownership and management of land and in the marine environment.
