Abstract
Man made defences, predominantly in the form of seawalls, protect approximately 860 kilometres (23%) of the English coast. Peak overtopping discharges represents a serious hazard for pedestrians and vehicles moving behind the wall, and for certain seawall designs, the peak individual discharge may also be the event initiating damage to, or failure of, the defence. This manual provides guidance to coastal and flood defence engineers on the design of new seawalls and the assessment and remediation of existing structures. Water levels and wave conditions are described. Methods for predicting mean overtopping discharges, the number of overtopping waves and the peak individual overtopping event for a variety of structures are explained. Tolerable overtopping discharges and their potential application in design practice are also examined.
