Abstract
Detail guidance is given on the investigation, appraisal, remedial treatment and building on sites which have become derelict, mainly as a result of human activity. The body of the publication is in two parts; Part A outlines the basic principles and procedure of the development of derelict sites and Part B explains in detail the problems posed by derelict sites and how solutions can be approached. The hazards of filled and contaminated sites are discussed with reference to specific industrial past uses, which may be identifiable from historical records. The initial assessment, detailed site investigation, sampling techniques and final appraisal of a derelict site are described. Remedial treatment of filled and contaminated sites is covered and design of foundations, below-ground services, roads and other paving is discussed. The value of monitoring and the importance of contractual aspects are stressed. Detailed guidance is given on matters concerning the safety of site workers and third parties.
