Abstract
Advice is given on how to protect groundwater when storing liquid hydrocarbons in underground storage tanks (USTs). Operational and management practices are outlined including the key elements to ensure groundwater protection (environmental risk assessment, engineering requirements, management systems and controls and emergency plans/procedures). Details are given for the commissioning, operation and decommissioning of facilities.
