Abstract
Pneumatic conveying systems are employed in many process industries and conveying ducts, hoppers, filters and other vessels may contain finely divided combustible material. There is always a possibility of an ignition source, and the consequent risk of a dust fire or explosion should never be disregarded. The best solution is to eliminate the ignition hazard at an early stage, before it is able to start an explosion or fire.

Loss Prevention Council
Formed from a merger of the Fire Offices Committee, the Fire Insurers Research and Testing Organisation and the Insurers Technical Bureau in 1984, the Loss Prevention Council (LPC) later went on to develop a certification body, the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB), itself taken over by BRE Certification in April 2000. Other LPC documents are now available from the Fire Protection Association.
