Abstract
Examines the concept of fire resistance and its function. It looks at when structural elements need to exhibit fire resistance along with what and why fire resistance may be required. Design methods are reviewed showing how fire resistance may be achieved. It explains how fire resistant structures may be designed and looks at structures that are inherently fire resistant and methods and techniques for providing or improving their fire performance. Finally, there is a brief introduction to the new discipline of Fire Safety Engineering and how it might affect the design process in the future.
