Abstract
A simple method of achieving 60 minutes fire resistance of steel columns by partial concrete encasement is presented. The columns should be designed as columns in simple construction according to BS 5950-1. Four fire tests on columns were performed. The columns were subject to loads of 0.35 to 0.55 times the cold capacity of the steel section and achieved fire resistances of 58 to 72 minutes respectively. A design method is proposed, together with design tables. Comparison between the tests and predicted performance is presented.
