Abstract
Looks specifically at two initiatives from the United States and makes recommendations aimed at those attempting to monitor their own performance on sustainability and identify problematic areas in the use and development of sustainability indicators. Concludes by suggesting a number of considerations that should be taken into consideration when developing sets of sustainability indicators. These include the need to have input from the stakeholders in the project, the need to tailor indicators to available data and most importantly, the need to use results from indicators to drive change and improve performance.
