Report BR 236 Fire grading of buildings: Part I. General principles and structural precautions
Publication Year
1946
Document Status
Current
Abstract
Review of the underlying principles of fire protection in buildings presenting the results in the form of recommendations. The main area of focus for Part 1 is limiting the development and spread of any fires that have started in terms of the planning, construction and separation of buildings (passive defence). It encompasses steps to secure proper subdivision of large buildings by walls and floors of adequate fire resistance. It takes into account the design of load-bearing members to provide this resistance, and considers how access by firemen is facilitated. It includes steps to minimise the risk of the spread of fire from one building or part of a building to another.
