Abstract
Intended to explain the availability of information on foundation materials in the publications of the British Geological Survey (BGS) and the Soil Survey of England and Wales and to explain the terminology used in these publications. Most attention is paid to those substrates most commonly linked to foundation failure.

Formed from a merger of the Fire Offices Committee, the Fire Insurers Research and Testing Organisation and the Insurers Technical Bureau in 1984, the Loss Prevention Council (LPC) later went on to develop a certification body, the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB), itself taken over by BRE Certification in April 2000.
