Abstract
Reflects on the experiences of two housing associations in London that took part in an architectural competition to select designers for new affordable housing schemes. A design team of French and British architects worked together on each project. The publication draws out lessons that can be applied to any new housing development and includes some inspirational projects to visit.

Now defunct, the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment was the government's advisor on architecture, urban design and public space. They replaced the Royal Fine Art Commission in 1999. In April 2011, the Design Council and CABE joined to become one organisation.
