Abstract
Proposes a classification scheme for the field description of potentially useful concretionary laterites. Discusses this link between how laterite is formed and how it relates to the landscape to facilitate effective field prospecting. Provides guidance for locating the material. Examines acceptance criteria for their use. Compares tropical countries’ specifications for the use of natural and lateritic gravels as inroad pavements, and also stabilisation practices. Recommends criteria to judge the suitability of lateritic gravels for use as sub-base and base materials.
