Abstract
Between the years of 2002-2004 there was a spate of women who took their own lives in prison in England and Wales. This paper examines the conditions which led to this crisis and looks at what changes have occurred in the female prison estate to bring about the more recent reduction in self-inflicted deaths. Looks at how this can be sustained and at what the future might hold.
