Abstract
Details a project to rehabilitate five derelict orphanage buildings dating from the 1850s. The aim was to restore, extend and partly reconstruct the buildings for use as social housing with discretely-added modern utilities. Considers historical background, extent of disrepair, architectural approach, conservation works, and the houses’ reliance on a sustainable energy heating system.
