Abstract
Discusses appropriate measures to be considered by all road projects in relation to bats. Covers status and protection, bat biology, habitats, survey methods for environmental assessment, licensing, effects of roads on bats, mitigation and monitoring. Also reviews legislation, policy and guidance.

Superseded by LD 118 Biodiversity design (formerly HA 59/92, HA 67/93, HA 80/99, HA 81/99, HA 84/01, HA 97/01, HA 98/01, HA 116/05, IAN 116/08, IAN 116/08(W)) (HE, 2020). Interim Advice Notes (IANs) are issued by the Highways Agency from time to time. They contain specific Guidance, which shall only be used in connection with works on motorways and trunk roads in England, subject to any specific implementation instructions contained within an IAN. Whilst IANs must be read in conjunction with the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) and Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works (MCHW) for the above works, and may incorporate amendments or additions to documents in these manuals, they are not part of the DMRB or MCHW. Supersedes HA 80/99.
