Abstract
Comprises letter to local authorities following publication of a circular and direction, which will come into force on 20 April 2009, and will apply to all applications for planning permission relating to land in England received on or after that date. It sets out the types of development on which local planning authorities will be required to consult the Secretary of State before granting planning permission. The guidance contained in the circular and direction will replace the provisions of directions listed in the letter. These will be cancelled insofar as they apply in relation to England. The letter also provides a list of planning circulars and other guidance documents which have become obsolete but never formally withdrawn and will also be cancelled.
