Abstract
A safe and secure environment is the prime objective of SBD recommendations. To achieve this objective, equal weighting should be given to both the environmental and physical security. There should be a mix of dwellings, as the potential for homes to be occupied throughout the day gives increased opportunity for natural surveillance, community interaction and environmental control. Updated to cover the Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH).

Now known as the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC). The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) existed until 31 March 2015, as an independent professional body coordinating the development of the police service in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The ACPO formed the Crime Prevention Initiatives to manage projects such as Secured by Design, which was established in 1989 and focussed on providing design guidance and security for new and refurbished homes, commercial premises and car parks.
