Abstract
Secured by Design' (SBD) is a police initiative to encourage the building industry to adopt crime prevention measures in development design to assist in reducing the opportunity for crime and the fear of crime, creating a safer and more secure environment. Endorsed by the Association of Chief Police Officers. (ACPO), and has the backing of the Home Office Crime Reduction and Community Safety Group and the Planning Section of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM, which is now known as the Department for Communities and Local Government DCLG). Elaborates on the core principles of integrated approach, environmental quality and sense of ownership, natural surveillance, access and footpaths, open space provision and management and lighting.

Now known as the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC). The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) existed until 31 March 2015, as an independent professional body coordinating the development of the police service in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The ACPO formed the Crime Prevention Initiatives to manage projects such as Secured by Design, which was established in 1989 and focussed on providing design guidance and security for new and refurbished homes, commercial premises and car parks.
