Abstract
Defines safety rules related to passenger and goods/passenger-lifts with a view to safeguarding persons and objects against the risk of accidents associated with the user, maintenance and emergency operation of lifts.

Superseded by BS EN 81-20:2014 and BS EN 81-50:2014. Supersedes BS 5655-1:1986. Amendment 10809 is Corrigendum No.1 dated March 2000 - Implementation of CEN corrigendum September 1999. Amendment 15794 dated March 2006 - Implementation of CEN amendments A1:2005 and A2:2004. Amendment dated 31 March 2010 - Implementation of CEN amendment A3:2009. Replaces BS 5655-1:1986 which remains current until the implementation of the EU Lift Directive. Until 1 July 1999 new lift installations can conform to either this British Standard or to BS 5655-1:1986. After 1 July 1999 BS 5655-1:1986, together with BS 5655-11:1989 will apply only for modernization of existing lift installations and this standard will apply to all new installations.
