Abstract
Describes the range of services which can be delivered from primary and community care buildings, and types of spaces needed to deliver these services. Building types include: GP premises, health centres, primary care centres, resource centres, urgent care units and community hospitals.

The planning and design manual is the updated equivalent of what was formerly published as Health Building Note 11-01: Facilities for primary and community care services. Read with Facilities for primary and community care services: policy and service context manual and Primary care case studies: selection criteria, findings, conclusions and recommendations.

The Department of Health was committed to improving the quality and convenience of care provided by the NHS and social services. Its work included setting national standards, shaping the direction of health and social care services and promoting healthier living. Publications included Space for Health: Technical Manuals, as well as the Health Building Notes, Health Technical Memorandums, and White Papers. They were renamed to the Department of Health and Social Care. However responsibility for technical guidance was then transferred to NHS Improvement in February 2017 which is now part of NHS England and NHS Improvement.
