Sets out Scottish Ministers' policies for the historic environment, provides greater policy direction for Historic Scotland and provides a framework that informs the day-to-day work of a range of organisations that have a role and interest in managing the historic environment. Looks at: designation, consents, properties in the care of Scottish Ministers and the conservation of the historic environment by government bodies in Scotland.

Historic Scotland was an executive agency of the Scottish Government from 1991 to 2015, responsible for safeguarding Scotland's built heritage, and promoting its understanding and enjoyment. Dissolved in March 2014, its functions were transferred to Historic Environment Scotland on 1st October 2015.
