Abstract
Applies to both single and dual carriageway roads in both urban and rural areas. Sets out the elements of design for use in the geometric design of roads. Also sets out the principles for coordinating the various design elements so as to ensure that the three dimensional layout as a whole is acceptable. Single carriageway design is given emphasis in order to provide clearly identifiable sections for overtaking.

The National Roads Authority's (NRA) primary function, under the Roads Act 1993, was to secure the provision of a safe and efficient network of National roads. They were responsible for the planning and supervision of construction and maintenance, publishing the NRA DMRB and NRA MCDRW. In 2016 the NRA merged with the Railway Procurement Agency (RPA) to form a new organisation, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).
