Abstract
Looks at the policy and service context and planning and design considerations for maternity care facilities. Including midwife-led units, consultant-led units, antenatal clinics, early pregnancy assessment units, pregnancy assessment units, birthing facilities and in-patient areas, including the requirements for the routine care of neonates, and obstetric theatres.

Supersedes Space for Health: Clinical Services 'Maternity care facilities: Planning and design manual' and 'Maternity care facilities: Policy and service context manual', which replaced HBN 09-02 Children, young people and maternity services - maternity care facilities (2008). Department of Health is now known as the Department of Health and Social Care.

Publications included Space for Health: Technical Manuals, as well as the Health Building Notes, Health Technical Memorandums, and White Papers. However responsibility for technical guidance was then transferred to NHS Improvement in February 2017 which is now part of NHS England and NHS Improvement.
