Abstract
Sets out the Department's planning policies for the conservation, protection and enhancement of Northern Ireland's natural heritage. For the purpose of this Planning Policy Statement, natural heritage is defined as 'the diversity of habitats, species, landscapes and earth science features'.

Will be cancelled by Strategic planning policy statement for Northern Ireland (SPPS) - planning for sustainable development (DOENI, 2015) when all eleven councils have adopted a new Plan Strategy for the whole of their council area. Supersedes Planning policy statement 2: Planning and nature conservation (DOENI, 1997); Draft planning policy statement 2 - natural heritage (revised): consultation paper; and Supplementary planning guidance to Draft planning policy statement 2 - natural heritage (revised): consultation paper (both DOENI, 2011). Also supersedes the following provisions in Planning Strategy for Rural Northern Ireland (DOENI, 1993), insofar as they refer to the protection of natural heritage: Policy SP 16 Environmental Protection; and Policy DES 4 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
