Abstract
Highlights the factors to consider when using temporary cover plates, looking at operational and engineering issues, maintenance and inspection and investigation of the existing bridge.

Superseded by CD 357 Highway structures and bridges. Design. Bridge expansion joints (formerly BD 33/94, BA 26/94, IAN 168/12, IAN 169/12) (HE, 2019) and TD 501 Road lighting design (formerly TD 23/99, TD 34/07, TA 49/07, IAN 167/12) (HE, 2020). Interim Advice Notes (IANs) are issued by the Highways Agency from time to time. They contain specific Guidance, which shall only be used in connection with works on motorways and trunk roads in England, subject to any specific implementation instructions contained within an IAN. Whilst IANs must be read in conjunction with the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) and Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works (MCHW) for the above works, and may incorporate amendments or additions to documents in these manuals, they are not part of the DMRB or MCHW. Revises HA IAN 169/12.
