Abstract
Approved Document B (fire safety) has been published in two volumes. Volume 1 deals with dwellinghouses and Volume 2 deals with all other types of building covered by the Building Regulations. Where very large (over 18m in height) or unusual dwellinghouses are proposed some of the guidance in Volume 2 may be needed to supplement that given by Volume 1. Covers requirements for: B1 means of warning and escape, B2 internal fire spread (linings), B3 internal fire spread (structure), B4 external fire spread and B5 access and facilities for the Fire and Rescue Service.
Document History
For use in Wales. Came into effect 30 April 2014. Main changes made by the 2013 amendments: This 2013 amendment to the Approved Document replaces the 2006 edition (incorporating the 2010 amendments) and only applies to Wales. The 2013 amendments reflect changes due to the introduction of Regulation 37A (Fire suppression systems) into the Building Regulations 2010, The new B1 Section 2 provides guidance on fire suppression systems. Guidance on materials and workmanship has also been amended to take account the introduction of a new Approved Document 7 which has been updated to reflect the European Construction Products Regulations. The main changes are: B1 residential automatic fire suppression systems and fire alarms; B5 vehicle access; Appendix H and in general a new-style format has been used. From 30 April 2014 the requirement will apply to new and converted: care homes, children's residential homes, hospices, boarding houses, halls of residences, hostels other than hostels intended for temporary accommodation for leisure purposes (e.g. not Youth Hostels or backpacker's hostels.). Further amendments to Volume 1 and 2 will be made in 2015 to reflect the requirement for houses and flats. Building regulation powers were devolved to Wales on 31 December 2011. The documents current on 31 December 2011 will continue to apply to Wales. As guidance is reviewed and changes made separate Welsh Approved Documents will be published.
