Abstract

Views are sought to simplify the control of small domestic sewage discharges from septic tanks and small sewage treatment plants. The aim is to reduce administrative burden for those rural properties that are not connected to the main sewerage network and apply risk based approach to prevent pollution, protect public health, improve drinking water supply and protect sensitive habitats. This supporting document provides additional information to help with the consultation such as explaining what a small sewage discharge is and looks at the changes proposed. It looks at how people will be informed if the changes are made. It also covers compliance with legal requirements, what is happening at the moment, general binding rules, permit requirements, designated sensitive areas, costs, source protection zones and whether improvements need to be made to existing septic tanks or small sewage treatment plants.
