Abstract
Provides guidance on the use of BD44, The Assessment of Concrete Road Bridges and Structures, and should be used in conjunction with the Standard. The major part of this document is contained in Annex A which is set out in the form of a commentary on the Standard. It contains explanations for the main changes from the design code, BS 5400: Part 4, and gives advice on the interpretation of the assessment requirements.

The National Roads Authority's (NRA) primary function, under the Roads Act 1993, was to secure the provision of a safe and efficient network of National roads. They were responsible for the planning and supervision of construction and maintenance, publishing the NRA DMRB and NRA MCDRW. In 2016 the NRA merged with the Railway Procurement Agency (RPA) to form a new organisation, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).
