Abstract
Presents an international collaboration for sharing knowledge on good practice for management and design of levees. Covers levees in flood risk management, construction and design, operation and maintenance, inspection, assessment and risk attribution, emergency management and operations, site characterisation and data requirements, physical processes and tools for levee assessment and design. This chapter looks at the principles and process for levee design, reporting and documentation, layout and alignment, geometry, surface protection measures, control of seepage and uplift, control of internal erosion, mass stability throughout levee life, analysing failure mechanisms, transitions, serviceability design, levee earthworks, spillways, associated structures and design input for the construction and operation stages.
