Abstract
Sets out the Department’s planning policies to minimise and manage flood risk to people, property and the environment. Aims to embody the Government’s commitment to sustainable development and the conservation of biodiversity. Adopts a precautionary approach to development and the use of land that takes account of climate change and emerging information relating to flood risk through the implementation of the EU Floods Directive in Northern Ireland and the implementation of sustainable drainage systems.

Will be cancelled by Strategic planning policy statement for Northern Ireland (SPPS) - planning for sustainable development (DOENI, 2015) when all eleven councils have adopted a new Plan Strategy for the whole of their council area. Supersedes Planning policy statement 15: Planning and flood risk (DENIPS, 2006).
